Date:        April 28, 2009

To:             GLDGC Members

From:        Tim Kieffer & GLDGC Committee

Subject:    Minutes of meeting held Sunday 04/19/09

Mission Statement: The Great Lakes Disc Golf Club is an organization comprised of Disc Golf enthusiasts.  Its focus is to increase public awareness, promote the sport and to bring new courses to the area.

The meeting was started at Spassland Park in Germantown at 5:00 PM. Present were Mark Peterson, Tim Strait, Tim Kieffer, Terry Miller, Mike Ellery Will Mueller, John Pecunia, and Nolan Harp.

The following reports were given:

Membership – There are 28 members current for 2009 with #284 b3ing the last number issued.  We need to come up with an email that welcomes new members and an email for non-current members encouraging them to become current. Hope to have something be the next meeting.

Events - The GMO is in the works with paperwork being submitted and coordinated with Brian of the Milwaukee County Parks system. Tentative dates are Saturday and Sunday May 23rd-24th (Pros and Advanced Saturday, balance of divisions Sunday), but it could end up being a one day tournament. Currently considering using both Dretzka and Brown Deer courses.

A Janesville tournament is planned for Saturday, May 2nd.

The Kenosha tournament (Parkside of the Moon on April 11th) filled with 90 competitors and was a success.

Treasurer’s Report – The account was reviewed, with the club being in a good position to promote the GLDGC and disc golf in a variety of ways. Some ideas considered included a club tent at the GMO among other ideas. Anyone out there have any ideas how to promote the 20th anniversary of the GLDGC?

Communications – Catching up on web site updates and getting old content removed. Creating the space and structure for upcoming league scores and stats.

Course Development and Maintenance – Dretzka and Brown Deer are still pulled until things dry out. Dineen is currently in with leagues starting on Tuesday nights.

Oak Creek news is slow in coming, with Abendschein’s future still up in the air and the possibility of a course in the Oak Creek Parkway still only in the discussion phase. No definite news as of yet regarding Oak Creek.

Possible work days coming, with Brown Deer tee pad maintenance being one of the projects at the top of the list.

General Discussion Items included:

·         Information is being gathered for tee sign sponsorship at Dretzka. We are working on getting a letter together outlining some of the accomplishments of the GLDGC over the past year and upcoming goals. Talk about possibly expanding the sponsorship program to other courses was dropped.

·         We are seeking a new course pro at Dineen as Will Mueller will be leaving us to move to Madison this fall.

·         Discussions concerning the scope and reach of the GLDGC were had. Clarification that the GLDGC does no own or control any of the courses in Southeast Wisconsin helped explain why we can possibly suggest and influence direction at some courses, but many parks systems on their own will make the decisions concerning if a course is pulled in the Spring, when it goes back in, what type of modifications are made and so on.  We will support and encourage anyone who cares to take a leadership role (course pro type) at any Southeastern disc golf course and become a point person for communication with the local Parks authorities. We would also support any grass roots local club efforts in areas that would benefit from increased local participation and involvement. Our role is to promote the growth and overall good of the sport of disc golf. We encourage anyone with ideas for course improvements or who is willing to pursue park communications to join us at our meetings and fill us in as to how we can be of assistance.

·         Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Wisconsin will be holding an event at Dineen on Saturday, May 30th. Will Mueller is coordinating the event. Nice job, Will!

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:00, with the next meeting being scheduled for Sunday May 17th at Dretzka Park at 5:00 PM. Main subject twill be the upcoming GMO, but please join us if you have ideas that can better the sport and are looking for the avenue that can help you implement them.

Oh, as a side note, did you know that this is the 20th anniversary of the Great Lakes Disc Golf Club? That’s right, the club was founded 20 years ago in 1989 by Uncle Joe. Anyone care to lend some effort and input in determining how we should mark this occasion? Let us know by joining us on May 17th!
